PMR at bedtime works through the same tense-release mechanism as any other time, but two things make it especially suited to sleep: you're already lying down, so there's no transition needed between "relaxed" and "trying to sleep", and the sheer physical effort of tensing muscle after muscle in sequence is, itself, mildly tiring in a way that supports drifting off.
Lie on your back if you can, arms at your sides, and work through each muscle group in order, tensing for about 5 seconds and then releasing completely, noticing the drop each time before moving on:

The single most common mistake with PMR for sleep is moving too fast. A daytime PMR session might move briskly, but at bedtime, the releases specifically deserve real time, 20 to 30 seconds of just noticing the muscle stay loose before moving to the next group, rather than 5. The goal isn't to finish the sequence, it's often fine, even ideal, to fall asleep partway through. If you're still awake after a full pass, a slower second pass through just the areas that still feel tense, often shoulders, jaw or hands, usually finishes the job.
