It's the primary pathway of the parasympathetic nervous system, the "rest and digest" counterpart to the sympathetic "fight or flight" response, and it's the main channel your brain and body use to communicate about safety and threat in both directions.
"Vagal tone" refers to how readily your vagus nerve activates the calming response when needed.
